Sorcerer 5eClass Guide & NPC Generator
Sorcerous origins, the spell list and slots, every Metamagic option and the stats that matter — then forge a finished sorcerer NPC, portrait and all, without typing a thing twice.
A sorcerer did not study — it was simply already in the blood. Few spells known, but every one of them can be twinned, quickened, or cast without a word or a gesture. Magic as instinct, bent mid-cast.

Role in party
The Bloodline Engine
Sorcerer = the party’s burst caster — a quickened Fireball plus a cantrip in one turn, a twinned Haste that ends fights, and the Charisma to talk your way out of the rest.
You want to bend one spell harder than anyone else at the table — dump it all into a single explosive turn, then be the party face for free.

Brynn Stormcaller
Lightning runs in her blood and, lately, out of her fingertips at inconvenient moments. Sailed out of a port that asked her, politely, not to come back.
Chosen lineage
Best Races for a Sorcerer
Charisma drives everything, so the best lineages either raise it or cover the sorcerer’s paper-thin defences.

Where the points go
Sorcerer Builds — Where the Points Go
Charisma casts it. Constitution decides whether you are still concentrating on it.
Blaster / control
Charisma is your save DC and attack. Constitution second — you are d6 and you will be holding concentration on Haste.
Divine Soul (support)
Cleric list on a sorcerer chassis. Wisdom third only for the odd save; Charisma still casts everything.
Storm / mobile
Fly away after every spell. Dexterity for armour class, since you have no armour at all.
The reason to play one
Font of Magic & Metamagic
This is the whole argument for sorcerer over wizard. From level 2 you get a pool of sorcery points — spend them to bend a spell mid-cast, or convert them into extra spell slots and back.
Font of Magic
A pool that refills on a long rest. Turn points into slots when you are dry, or slots into points to fuel Metamagic — the flexibility no other caster gets.
Quickened & Twinned
Quickened Spell casts an action spell as a bonus action — Fireball and a cantrip in one turn. Twinned Spell puts a single-target spell on two creatures; twinned Haste on the martials wins fights outright.
Subtle & Careful
Subtle Spell drops verbal and somatic components — cast bound, gagged, or in a throne room, and Counterspell can’t touch it. Careful Spell lets chosen allies auto-pass, so Fireball never burns your own.

Best Feats for a Sorcerer
A sorcerer wins by getting one spell off and keeping it up — so the best feats protect concentration, stretch your points, and patch the tiny spells-known list.
Multiclass combos
Best Sorcerer Multiclass Combos
Sorcery points convert to slots, so a caster dip pays double — every borrowed slot can become fuel for Metamagic.

Short-rest Pact Magic slots convert into sorcery points, which convert into long-rest slots — a controversial, near-bottomless well of spellcasting.

Armory
Best Sorcerer Equipment by Tier
What to carry as you level — you wear no armour, so your defence is a spell and your gear is all about the save DC.
The Bloodline
Spell List
Sorcerers know very few spells and can never swap them freely — so every pick is permanent, and every pick counts. Spellcasting is online from level 1.

Frequently Asked
Wizard vs Sorcerer — what’s the difference?
Wizards learn spells into a spellbook and prepare a different set each day from a huge list — unmatched versatility. Sorcerers know a small fixed list they can never change, but bend it with Metamagic: twin it, quicken it, cast it with no words or gestures. Wizard = options. Sorcerer = doing one thing extremely hard.
Why play a sorcerer instead of a wizard?
Metamagic. Twinned Haste on two martials, a quickened Fireball plus a cantrip in one turn, or Subtle Spell that Counterspell cannot stop and a gag cannot prevent. No wizard can do any of that. You also cast off Charisma, so you are the party face for free.
Are sorcerers stronger than wizards in D&D 5e?
Wizards are generally rated higher for versatility — they can prepare the exact answer to today’s problem. Sorcerers hit a higher ceiling in a single turn and are far better in social play. With Aberrant Mind or Divine Soul closing the spells-known gap, the two are much closer than the old reputation suggests.
What is the best sorcerer subclass?
Divine Soul (the whole cleric list plus Metamagic) and Aberrant Mind (free psionic spells that dodge the known-spells cap, plus cheap Subtle Spell) are the two strongest. Draconic Bloodline is the durable classic. Wild Magic is the most fun and the least reliable.
How do sorcery points and Metamagic work?
From level 2 you get sorcery points equal to your level. Spend them on Metamagic — 1 point for Subtle or Careful, 2 for Quickened, 3 for Heightened, or the spell’s level for Twinned. You can also convert points into spell slots and back, which is where the flexibility comes from.
What are the best stats for a sorcerer?
Charisma first, always — it is your spell save DC, attack and every social roll. Constitution a strong second: you have d6 hit points and you will be concentrating on Haste while people shoot you. Dexterity third for armour class, since you wear none.
How many spells does a sorcerer know?
Very few — fifteen at level 20, and swapping one only on level-up. This is the class’s real cost, and why Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul (which grant free spells outside that limit) are rated so highly.
