Components: S

You attempt to interrupt a creature in the process of casting a spell. If the creature is casting a spell of 3rd level or lower, its spell fails and has no effect. If it is casting a spell of 4th level or higher, make an ability check using your spellcasting ability. The DC equals 10 + the spell's level. On a success, the creature's spell fails and has no effect.

Bringing it to the table

Usage

At higher levelsWhen you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the interrupted spell has no effect if its level is less than or equal to the level of the spell slot you used.

Best Used For

1It auto-succeeds against anything 3rd level or lower. No roll, no save — the enemy’s turn simply does not happen.
2The single best reason to hold your reaction in any fight with an enemy caster.
3Subtle Spell (sorcerer) beats it — no verbal or somatic components means there is nothing visible to counter.
4Counterspell wars are real: cast it with a 5th-level slot and their counter needs a 5th too.

Counterspell, Answered

How does Counterspell work in 5e?

As a reaction when you see someone within 60 feet casting: spells of 3rd level or lower fail automatically. Against 4th level or higher you make a spellcasting ability check against DC 10 + the spell’s level.

Do you need to know what spell is being cast?

By the rules you do not — you react to seeing someone cast. Many tables let you spend your reaction on Identify-by-sight first, but rules-as-written you are countering blind.

Can you Counterspell a Counterspell?

Yes, and it happens constantly at high tables. Counterspell is 3rd level, so another Counterspell stops it automatically unless it was upcast.

What classes get Counterspell?

Wizard, sorcerer and warlock. Bards can take it with Magical Secrets, which is one of the most common Magical Secrets picks in the game.
