Sorcerer / Warlock “Coffeelock”Multiclass Build Guide — D&D 5e
Short-rest Pact Magic slots convert into sorcery points, which convert into long-rest slots — a controversial, near-bottomless well of spellcasting.
The synergy
Why Sorcerer / Warlock Works
The Coffeelock exploits a loop at the intersection of two resource systems. Warlock Pact Magic slots recharge on a short rest. Font of Magic lets a sorcerer convert spell slots into sorcery points and sorcery points back into spell slots. Chain them together: short rest, recover Pact Magic slots, convert those slots into sorcery points, convert those points into sorcerer spell slots. Repeat. The result is a character who banks more slots than any long-rest caster is supposed to have.
The build is genuinely powerful and genuinely contentious. RAW, nothing caps how many spell slots you can create with sorcery points, so a Coffeelock who takes eight short rests before a fight walks in with a stack of 1st- and 2nd-level slots larger than a wizard’s entire table. Many DMs apply the optional Xanathar’s exhaustion rule (one level of exhaustion per skipped long rest) or simply rule that created slots vanish on a long rest. Ask your table before you commit three levels to this.
Even without the infinite loop, the shell is strong. Two warlock levels give Eldritch Blast + Agonizing Blast (reliable ranged damage the sorcerer list lacks), two invocations, and short-rest slots that convert into Metamagic fuel every rest. Warlock 3 adds Pact of the Chain (a familiar that can deliver touch spells) or Pact of the Tome (extra cantrips and ritual casting the sorcerer desperately wants).
Ability priority: CHA → CON → DEX — Charisma drives both sorcerer and warlock spellcasting, Eldritch Blast damage (via Agonizing Blast), and save DCs. Constitution for concentration. No stat tax — both classes require Charisma.

Frequently Asked
Will my DM allow the Coffeelock loop?
Many DMs disallow it or apply Xanathar’s exhaustion-on-no-long-rest rule. Even with the loop banned, the build is strong: short-rest slots feeding Metamagic, Eldritch Blast as a cantrip, and a patron feature are worth the dip on their own.
Which patron is best for Coffeelock?
Hexblade for damage (Curse + multi-beam EB). Genie for Bottled Respite (a safe place to short rest and convert slots). Fiend for temp HP on kills. Undead for Form of Dread fear rider on EB.
Warlock 2 or 3?
Warlock 2 is the efficient stop: EB + 2 invocations + short-rest slots + Font of Magic conversion. Warlock 3 adds a Pact Boon (Chain for familiar, Tome for rituals) but delays sorcerer Metamagic and sorcery points by another level. Take 3 only if the Boon fills a real gap.
