A creature you touch becomes invisible until the spell ends. Anything the target is wearing or carrying is invisible as long as it is on the target's person. The spell ends for a target that attacks or casts a spell.

Bringing it to the table

Usage

At higher levelsWhen you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 2nd.

Best Used For

1Getting in, getting out, getting past — not winning a fight. The spell ends the instant the target attacks or casts a spell, so it is a heist tool, not an opener.
2It is concentration, up to 1 hour. Half the table forgets this: hold this and you are holding nothing else.
3Upcasting is the hidden value — one extra creature per slot level above 2nd. A 5th-level slot walks four people past the guards.
4If you want to be invisible while fighting, that is Greater Invisibility at 4th. Do not ask this spell to do that job.

Counsel

Invisibility, Answered

Does Invisibility break when you attack?

Yes — the spell ends for a target that attacks or casts a spell. Note it ends for that target only: if you upcast it onto several people, everyone else stays invisible.

Does Invisibility require concentration?

Yes — concentration, up to 1 hour. Taking damage forces a Constitution save to hold it, and casting any other concentration spell drops it.

Invisibility vs Greater Invisibility?

Invisibility (2nd level) ends when you attack; Greater Invisibility (4th) does not. That single clause is what the extra two levels buy — one is a combat spell, this one is an infiltration spell.

What does being invisible actually do in 5e?

Attack rolls against you have disadvantage and your attack rolls have advantage. You are not silent and not undetectable — creatures can still guess your square, and some senses ignore invisibility entirely.
