Rogue / RangerMulticlass Build Guide — D&D 5e
Extra Attack, Hunter’s Mark and a Gloom Stalker’s first-round nova — the deadliest ambush rogue in the game.
The synergy
Why Rogue / Ranger Works
Gloom Stalker’s Dread Ambusher gives you an extra attack with an extra 1d8 damage on the first round of every combat, plus bonus movement. Combine that with a rogue’s Sneak Attack and the first round looks like this: two attacks (one with Dread Ambusher’s extra 1d8), Sneak Attack on whichever hits, plus Hunter’s Mark damage on each — all before the enemy has acted. Against a surprised target with Assassinate, the Sneak Attack dice are doubled. Nothing in 5e produces a more devastating opening round.
Ranger 5 adds Extra Attack, giving you two base attacks every round (three on round one with Dread Ambusher). More attacks means more chances to land Sneak Attack and more Hunter’s Mark triggers. The cost is real — five levels delays Uncanny Dodge and Evasion, and your Sneak Attack dice are five levels behind a pure rogue — but the sustained damage from two marked attacks plus Sneak Attack often outpaces what those extra dice would have given.
The shallower Ranger 3 version skips Extra Attack and takes only the Gloom Stalker archetype plus Hunter’s Mark. You still get the devastating first round and a concentration damage boost, but your subsequent rounds rely on a single attack per turn. This version reaches rogue milestones (Reliable Talent, Evasion) faster. Choose by how long your campaign runs.
Ability priority: DEX → WIS → CON — Dexterity is attack, damage, AC and initiative for both classes. Wisdom powers ranger spellcasting and improves the Gloom Stalker’s initiative bonus (WIS added to initiative). Constitution for hit points and Hunter’s Mark concentration.

Frequently Asked
Ranger 3 or Ranger 5?
Ranger 3 is the quick dip — Gloom Stalker for the first-round nova, then back to rogue for faster Sneak Attack scaling. Ranger 5 adds Extra Attack for sustained damage but delays Rogue features by two more levels. In campaigns ending around level 12, Ranger 3 is usually better.
Does Umbral Sight work with Sneak Attack?
Yes. If the target cannot see you (because you are invisible to its darkvision), you have advantage, which qualifies for Sneak Attack. In darkness, this is free advantage every round with no action cost.
Assassin or another Roguish Archetype?
Assassin maximises the first-round synergy — auto-crit on surprised targets doubles all those dice. But Assassinate is useless in fights that do not start with surprise. Scout gives extra Expertise and mobility; Arcane Trickster gives Shield for survivability. Assassin is the highest ceiling, Trickster is the highest floor.
