The synergy

Why Ranger / Fighter Works

Ranger already has the Archery fighting style, the best flat accuracy bonus in 5e (+2 to ranged attack rolls). Fighter 1 adds a second style — Defense (+1 AC) is the standard, quietly raising a medium-armour ranger’s survivability without any ongoing cost. Second Wind adds a bonus-action self-heal, something the ranger otherwise has to spend a spell slot on.

Fighter 2 is the real prize: Action Surge. An extra action means two more ranged attacks, each triggering Hunter’s Mark. On round one, a Gloom Stalker ranger who Action Surges produces: two normal attacks, one Dread Ambusher bonus attack with +1d8, then two more attacks from Action Surge — five shots in a single round, each carrying Hunter’s Mark. That is the most devastating ranged alpha strike any martial can produce, and it recharges on a short rest.

The dip is shallow and painless because both classes share Strength and Dexterity as their multiclass ability requirements. There is no new stat to fund. The only cost is two levels of delayed ranger spell progression, which means your highest-level slots arrive two levels late. In a campaign that ends before 17th level, you will never miss those slots.

Ability priority: DEX → CON → WISDexterity is your entire ranged engine. Constitution holds Hunter’s Mark concentration and benefits from the fighter’s CON save proficiency (if you start Fighter 1). Wisdom is for spell save DCs, which most ranger spells do not rely on.

When to take what

Level Breakpoints

Fighter 1 (char 1)CON save proficiency, heavy armour, a Fighting Style (Defense or Dueling) and Second Wind. A survivable start.
Ranger 2 (char 3)Archery style and spellcasting. Hunter’s Mark is online.
Ranger 3 (char 4)Archetype: Gloom Stalker for the alpha-strike synergy, or Hunter for sustained damage.
Ranger 5 (char 6)Extra Attack. Two marked shots per turn, baseline.
Fighter 2 (char 7)Action Surge. Five shots on round one with Gloom Stalker. The nova turn that defines the build.

What makes it tick

Key Features & Spells

Action Surge Alpha StrikeOn round one with Gloom Stalker: 2 normal + 1 Dread Ambusher + 2 from Surge = 5 marked attacks. The highest ranged burst in 5e.
Second Fighting StyleDefense on top of Archery. +1 AC permanently, no action, no resource. The ranger’s thin medium-armour AC appreciates every point.
CON Save ProficiencyStarting Fighter 1 gives Constitution saves. Hunter’s Mark is a concentration spell; CON proficiency keeps it alive through damage.
Second WindBonus-action self-heal, free. The ranger’s only other self-healing costs a spell slot, so this is pure economy.

Counsel

Frequently Asked

Start Fighter 1 or dip later?

Starting Fighter 1 gives CON save proficiency and heavy armour from level 1 — hugely valuable for concentration and early durability. Dipping at character 6 or 7 preserves early ranger progression but misses the CON save. Starting fighter is the stronger option for most builds.

Is Fighter 3 worth it for a subclass?

Rarely. Battle Master manoeuvres (Precision Attack to turn a miss into a hit) are tempting, but three levels costs a full tier of ranger spell progression. The jump from Fighter 2 to 3 gives far less than 1 to 2. Stay at 2.

How does this compare to Ranger/Rogue?

Fighter dip gives burst (Action Surge nova on round one). Rogue gives sustained extras (Sneak Attack every turn, Expertise, Cunning Action). If your fights are decided in the first two rounds, Fighter; if they run five or more, Rogue.
