The synergy

Why Fighter / Barbarian Works

A fighter already has the most attacks in 5e — two at 5th, three at 11th, four at 20th — and Action Surge doubles them for one round. Rage adds flat bonus damage to every single one of those Strength melee hits (+2 rising to +3 at Barbarian 3), and resistance to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing halves most incoming damage. The multiplication is what makes this build: six attacks in an Action Surge round, each carrying rage bonus, behind damage resistance that effectively doubles your hit points.

Barbarian 3 is the breakpoint because it unlocks a Primal Path. Bear Totem extends resistance to all damage types except psychic while raging, turning an already durable fighter into the single hardest thing to kill in melee. Alternatively, Zealot adds free extra damage every turn with no resource cost. After 3 you stop — the fighter’s third and fourth attacks at 11 and 20 are worth far more than anything barbarian levels 4+ offer.

The cost is real: you cannot wear heavy armour while raging (you lose Fast Movement and the rage’s feel, though technically you can), and you delay your third attack and your ability score improvements. The build works best as a two-handed Strength fighter who was already planning to swing a greatsword — Rage does nothing for archers or Dexterity builds.

Ability priority: STR → CON → DEXStrength drives both your attack rolls and rage damage. Constitution is hit points and concentration-free durability. Dexterity is largely irrelevant — you are in medium armour at best while raging.

When to take what

Level Breakpoints

Fighter 5Extra Attack. Two swings per turn, each carrying rage bonus. The fighter’s damage doubles.
Barbarian 1 (char 6)Rage and Unarmored Defense. Resistance is online; switch to medium armour or go unarmoured.
Barbarian 3 (char 8)Primal Path — Bear Totem for near-universal resistance, or Zealot for free damage. The dip is complete.
Fighter 11 (char 14)Third attack. Three raging swings per turn, six under Action Surge. The multiplier that justifies staying fighter.

What makes it tick

Key Features & Spells

Action Surge + RageAn extra action while raging: six attacks in one round at fighter 11, each with rage bonus. The highest martial burst available.
Rage ResistanceHalf damage from bludgeoning, piercing and slashing — or all damage except psychic with Bear Totem. Layered on top of the fighter’s d10 hit die.
Reckless AttackAdvantage on all Strength attacks this turn, at the cost of advantage against you. Behind resistance, the trade is overwhelmingly in your favour.
Fighting StyleGreat Weapon Fighting rerolls 1s and 2s on damage dice. Combined with rage bonus on every hit, the floor for each swing rises sharply.
IndomitableReroll a failed saving throw once per rest. Covers the mental saves that rage and resistance cannot.

Counsel

Frequently Asked

Should I start Fighter or Barbarian?

Fighter 1 for Constitution save proficiency and heavier starting armour. You want CON saves for concentration if you ever pick up Eldritch Knight, and the extra hit point from a d10 vs d12 is negligible next to the save.

Can I rage in heavy armour?

Yes — you still get the damage bonus and advantage on Strength checks. But you lose rage resistance entirely, which is most of the reason you dipped barbarian. Wear half plate or go unarmoured.

Fighter/Barbarian vs pure Barbarian?

This build has more attacks, Action Surge and a Fighting Style. Pure barbarian has a larger rage damage bonus, more rages per day, and Relentless Rage. Fighter/Barbarian wins on burst; pure barbarian wins on sustained durability.
