Components: V, S, M (a short piece of fine copper wire)

You send a short message of twenty-five words or less to a creature with which you are familiar. The creature hears the message in its mind, recognizes you as the sender if it knows you, and can answer in a like manner immediately. The spell enables creatures with Intelligence scores of at least 1 to understand the meaning of your message.

You can send the message across any distance and even to other planes of existence, but if the target is on a different plane than you, there is a 5 percent chance that the message doesn't arrive.

Best Used For

1Twenty-five words, unlimited distance, and they can answer immediately. It is the only reliable long-range communication most parties will ever have.
2The word limit is the game, not the obstacle. Count them before your GM does — the best Sendings are written, not improvised.
3You must be familiar with the target. What "familiar" means is your GM’s call, and it is the clause that stops this spell from solving every plot.
4Across planes there is a flat 5 percent chance it simply never arrives. Within a plane, none. When the message matters, that is a real risk.

Counsel

Sending, Answered

How many words can you send with Sending?

Twenty-five or fewer. The target hears it in their mind and can answer immediately with a message of the same length.

Does Sending work across planes?

Yes — but with a 5 percent chance the message does not arrive. Within a single plane there is no distance limit and no failure chance.

Can you use Sending on someone you have never met?

No. You must be familiar with the creature. Exactly how familiar is a GM ruling, but a name and a description is generally not enough.

Does the target have to reply to Sending?

No. They can answer immediately in the same way, but nothing compels them to — and if they know you, they know who sent it.
