Random Encounter

The party has been hired to clear a smuggling route through the Hollowfang Caverns, where a merchant guild's cargo keeps vanishing. Descending past old dwarven waystones wrapped in fresh, sticky webbing, they emerge into a cathedral-sized cavern lit by phosphorescent fungus. Suspended in the webs above are half-devoured pack mules and the guild's missing courier, still alive, cocooned and moaning. Four massive spider-centaur shapes cling motionless to the ceiling and walls, indistinguishable from stalactites until they move.

The four driders are not at full strength — they are newly Chosen of Lolth, mid-transformation and starving, having just fled a losing territorial war with a rival brood. In game terms, run them as CR 6 statblocks but each drider has only 45 hp (transformation-weakened), no spell slots yet (their innate spellcasting hasn't awakened), and they fight with a berserk, uncoordinated hunger rather than tactics — meaning only 1-2 engage the party directly each round while others feed on the cocooned mules, buying the party time. This turns an unwinnable 4-drider deadly fight into a genuinely deadly but survivable one, provided the party doesn't aggro all four simultaneously by torching the webbing or screaming near the courier.

If the party frees the courier quietly and retreats without triggering the sleeping/feeding driders, they escape with valuable intel about the brood's weakened state, which the merchant guild will pay handsomely to pass along to Lolth's rivals or a duergar warband looking to wipe the brood out. If combat is joined, defeating even two driders causes the remaining two to break off and flee upward into the cavern's ceiling cracks, dragging the courier's cocoon with them as a distraction — the party can choose to pursue for the killing blow and full loot (drider chitin armor, a Lolth-marked spider idol worth 200gp to certain buyers) or let them go and settle for rescuing survivors and looting the initial camp of stolen guild cargo.
