Way of the Sun SoulMonk Monastic Tradition — D&D 5e

Way of the Sun Soul gives the monk what it’s usually missing entirely: a ranged attack. Radiant energy bolts let you contribute at range without a weapon, and a ki-fueled burst can hit a whole cluster of enemies at once, making this the tradition that finally lets a monk deal with archers, casters, and mobs instead of having to close distance into every one of them.

Way of the Sun Soul Features

Level 3Radiant Sun Bolt

As a bonus action or as part of the Attack action, you can hurl a mote of light at a target within 30 feet, dealing radiant damage on a hit using your martial arts die, so a Sun Soul monk finally has a real answer to enemies who just won’t come to them.

Level 3Searing Arc Strike

By spending 2 or more ki points as part of the Attack action, you can unleash a cone of fire that forces every creature caught in it to make a Dexterity save against fire damage, giving you an on-demand area blast most monk subclasses never get.

Level 6Searing Sunburst

You can spend 2 ki points to create a burst of radiant light in a 20-foot sphere, forcing everyone inside to save or take radiant damage — a straightforward upgrade to your area options that hits harder and reaches further than Searing Arc Strike.

Level 11Searching Light

You can spend 2 ki points to grant yourself or an ally the ability to see invisible creatures and objects for a minute, letting your radiant theme double as a hard counter to the invisibility tricks that usually give monks the most trouble.

Level 17Sun Shield

You constantly shed bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light beyond that, and any creature that hits you with a melee attack takes radiant damage back, meaning by this point your body itself has become another one of your damage sources.
