Battle MasterFighter Martial Archetype — D&D 5e

Battle Master is the fighter subclass for players who want a hand of cards to play every combat instead of just rolling attacks. You pick a menu of maneuvers — trip, disarm, feint, rally, and more — fuel them with a shared pool of superiority dice, and choose a different tactical option almost every turn, making this by a wide margin the archetype with the highest skill ceiling in the class.

Battle Master Features

Level 3Combat Superiority

You learn a set of maneuvers — options like Trip Attack to knock a target prone, Disarming Attack to strip its weapon, Feinting Attack for guaranteed advantage, or Rally to hand an ally temporary hit points — and spend superiority dice to trigger them on hits, refilling the pool on a short rest so you’re rarely without options.

Level 7Know Your Enemy

After a minute of studying a creature you can see, you learn how it stacks up against you in a category of your choosing — combat prowess, saving throws, hit points, and the like — turning guesswork about a tough enemy into hard information before you commit resources to the fight.

Level 10Improved Combat Superiority

Your superiority dice step up to d10s, so every maneuver you already know starts hitting harder without you having to learn anything new — the payoff for a build that was already doing the most work at the table.

Level 15Relentless

If you roll initiative with no superiority dice left, you get one back immediately, guaranteeing you always open a fight with at least one maneuver in hand instead of starting dry because you burned your dice on the last encounter.
